The same font names (Minion Pro Regular, Minion Pro Italic, Minion Pro Medium, Semibold, Bold, etc., etc.) show up in both the Minion Pro package that comes with CS/CS3 and in the Minion Pro Opticals collection. Same with the Condensed families. Are these the same fonts, or is there something different about the ones that are included in the Opticals collections?

They are the same ones. The Minion Pro fonts that do not have an optical size indicator in their name are optimized for normal text sizes of about 10-14 points.

Note that virtually all fonts are by their very nature designed and spaced to work best at some particular size range. It's just a question of what that size range is and whether the type foundry is clear and specific about it.

See also: <http://www.adobe.com/type/topics/opticalsize.html> for more information on optical sizes.

I'm all too well aware of optical size, I'm moving from my beloved Minion Multiple Master to OpenType Pro (sniff).

Then I would go for the Opticals versions for the most versatility.

Sorry, David, you have my sympathies on the MMs. I hope the opticals info is helpful to other folks.
